Lunches Provided to COVID-19 Test Site![]() Recently, Grace Kendall, owner of Fast Sign, purchased twenty boxed lunches and Curt Vaniman and Mike Leonard delivered the lunches to the workers at the Providence Health COVID-19 test site. This "mini" project was completed as a Gateway Rotary Service Project. This was the second time Gateway Rotarians have pooled resources to donate boxed lunches to the frontline workers at the test site. It was done to recognize the importance of their job and the personal sacrifices these workers are making for our community (recalling the flood of test being conducted before and during the Thanksgiving holiday). A big thank you to Grace, Mike, and Curt for modeling "Service above Self" and representing the Gateway Rotary Club. |

Gateway Supports Tiny House Project![]() ROTARY CLUB BUILDS TRANSITIONAL TINY HOME RESIDENCES BY REBECCA SANCHEZ FOR THURSTONTALK.COM (permission granted) The power of volunteers is incredible. Thurston county charity groups, students and volunteers united in an effort to house the unhoused in the Olympia community. Lacey, Olympia and Gateway Rotary clubs, Community Youth Services’ Youth Build and the Olympia Union Gospel Mission partnered in a construction project and built five tiny new homes. The genesis of the project was with an application submitted to local Rotary club members proposing the idea of building the tiny homes for the homeless. Each year, Rotary clubs review such proposals requesting support. The Youth Build program with Community Youth Services proposed the tiny home project and was selected as the recipient of Rotary’s financial assistance. With funding from three different Rotary clubs and matching funds from the Rotary district level, Youth Build began their construction project at the New Market Skills Center in Tumwater with a total of $21,000.00. |

FREE ONLINE DISTRICT TRAINING-SATURDAY MAY 16, 2020TRAINING WITH A DIFFERENCE Due to Covid-19, Rotary District was unable to hold the annual District Training in person. They recognize the importance of these training sessions in providing important education and information for the new Rotary year. So They have created District Training via Zoom (DTvZ) which will offer key training courses online for free on May 16th, 2020. Attending DTvZ will not only give you some amazing training, it will also help you connect with fellow Rotarians. So while we cannot get together in person during this time, you can still be part of Rotary with Rotarians all over our district. |
April meetings to be ZOOM meetingsFellow Gateway Rotarians, Our club is a vivid example of how connectivity is important for our society. Perhaps like me, you may find yourself recharged and energized through meeting fellow Gateway Rotarians at our weekly meetings. Social distancing and adhering to guidelines provided by government officials and our medical community will hopefully flatten the curve and shorten the effects from this coronavirus pandemic. However, that social distancing has removed the connection that each of us so desperately needs. |
Gateway Rotary Cancellations through end of MarchAfter careful consideration and collaboration and in following with public health directives to ensure social distancing and minimizing larger gatherings, Gateway Rotary leadership has decided to cancel all its activities through the end of March including the next two regular Wednesday meetings (3/18 & 3/25), all service projects, and the Paul Harris Dinner. Gateway leadership will continue to follow the advice of local, state, and federal agencies on recommended actions and will update the club accordingly if timelines are extended. As always, thank you for your understanding. Best Regards, Len Faucher President, Gateway Rotary Club |
Read Across AmericaWe Need You! Pleasant Glade Elementary is celebrating Read Across America with a Read Aloud Day on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. We need volunteers to read aloud for about an hour in a classroom. It involves a brief introduction where you tell the kids about yourselves, read one or two books to the class and then a short conversation. The kids are amazing and this is a fun experience (kids say the darnedest things). Volunteers may bring their own books or select from a variety of books selected by the librarian. The school is K-5. Once signed up, I will forward your contact information to Anne Hales and she will coordinate with you and answer any questions you may have. You may bring your favorite read aloud books. There will be a variety of books selected for each grade level if you would prefer to choose one from the PGE library. When you arrive, Anne Hales, the librarian will provide you with a list of your classes and a map. Currently each volunteer slot is for three class visits. The schedule could be modified if a shorter time period is necessary. The hope is that the readers will have the chance to introduce themselves, read a book or two, and have a short conversation with each class. You can sign up at: Available time slots 8:30-9:45 9:30-10:45 9:35-1045 9:40-10:45 9:45-10:50 12:00-1:50 1:25-2:35 If you have any questions, contact me. Laurie Carroll |

September is Literacy MonthSeptember we celebrate literacy and basic education, one of the six areas of focus for Rotary. Did you know that 1 in 3 American children start Kindergarten without the skills they need to learn to read? Developing literacy skills early makes it easier for kids to learn to read. Reading aloud is the single most important activity leading to language development, sound and letter recognition, understanding of how stories work, vocabulary, and the ability to listen. Once again we are having a book drive, collecting new or gently used books for ages birth to high school. These books will be donated to the South Sound Reading Foundation. (www.southsoundreading.org) Their mission is to ensure that all children and families have access to books. They are most in need of board books for babies, beginning readers (level and easy chapter books), Spanish and bilingual books and high quality non-fiction. So Gateway Rotarians, start cleaning out your kid’s books, pick up books while you are at the store, visit a garage sale, and purchase all the kids books you can find or put a box in your place of business and collect there. Also, here is a link for an Amazon wish list for South Sound Reading Foundation. This is a contest with the Lacey Rotary Club ending the end of October. We have been beat soundly the past two years. Lets not make it three in a row for them. |

She’s a marketing, sales and community outreach professional. Gateway Rotary Club Member Spotlight On Doug Mah![]() |
Getting To Know Gateway Rotary Club's Surfer![]() Last month, I sat down and met with our featured Gateway Rotary Club member, Scott Michie, a member since 2015. I learned that this commercial banker with Heritage Bank grew up in west Olympia, graduating from Capital High School, then on to Western Washington University, graduating with an undergraduate degree in Economics. (Is it me or are there a few Vikings in our Club?) Some of the unique experiences of this father of 13-year-old Andrew, 5-year-old Asher and amazing fiancée of Sierra, include teaching pottery in Thailand, going on a running vacation and running a marathon in Jamaica and surfs or runs when not being with the family, working or being at Rotary. |
Welcome to Gateway Rotary Club Shannon Glenn![]() Gateway Rotary Club is growing new members on a regular basis. Have you met one our newest members, Shannon Glenn? Graduating in 2012 from Weatherwax High School, this highly-motivated gal attended Grays Harbor College, then the University of Las Vegas, completing an undergraduate degree in criminal justice. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in organizational management and plans to graduate this May to enhance her leadership skills. She currently serves as the Alumni Relations and Community Engagement Coordinator (Community Relations) at the South Puget Sound Community College. Her family still remains in the Aberdeen area, with sister following in her footsteps at Grays Harbor College. She’s good at bat trivia and games, so if we start having a Rotary Club Game Night—watch out! Her favorites include the family vacation on Maui, Hawaii celebrating her parents’ 25th wedding anniversary (no travel agenda, no devices!), macaroni and cheese, Christmas (gratitude and opportunities to help others) and mom’s birthday. In her spare time, you’ll find Shannon kayaking on Woodard Bay or going to concerts. |
Meet Gateway Rotarian David Bader![]() At Gateway Rotary, we have a great group of members who are from such diverse backgrounds and industries, and they all share a common trait—community. David Bader, a Gateway Rotarian since February 2018, is all about community. This Capital High School alumni is married, has a daughter and is definitely a part of this community. Prior to developing his craft in the financial and mortgage industry, he managed retail audio systems stores. He moved up north for a few years before returning to Thurston County, where he’s been a Country Financial agent for the past two years. He not only works and lives in the City of Lacey, but also supports worthy causes here. His involvement has ranged from supporting Homeless Backpacks and the Lacey Chamber Golf Tournament, to being one of the sponsors of the Lacey Police Department’s Cops & Cars event. |
Who is Meghan Goldenberger?![]() We have some pretty cool members in our Rotary Club. One of them is Meghan Goldenberger. Born in Alaska to a father who fished and built elementary school pools, and a mother, who was a nurse. She lived on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana for a bit, before moving to Thurston County, where she met husband in her high school in French class and married him last year. Oddly enough, her best friend Megan, who co-leads Together! with her, was also born and raised in Alaska. |
Classification: Amanda Conley Vey![]() Amanda Vey Family is very important to Amanda. We learned her father, once a pilot with PanAm and then United Airlines, has passed on, but her mother is a very lively and active 84 years young. Flying runs in her family and her sister is also and airline captain. From the pictures she shared it was clear to see she has a special bond with her family members, especially her younger sister with whom she has had many adventures. She met her husband, who is also a pilot, through a blind date set up by mutual friends. Over the years, they have enjoyed many adventures and vacations together. They share their lives with several fur-babies: three dogs and multiple chickens. Amanda also enjoys vegetable gardening, canning, and a good beer from time to time. |

First Annual Tour de Lacey a Success![]() Kimberley Bauman, Designated Broker of Sound Advantage Realty in Olympia, Washington, a member of Gateway Rotary and the Thurston County REALTORS® Association, organized a community bike ride named the Tour de Lacey. Tour de Lacey conducted on July 9, 2016 is an organized ride that begins and ends at Huntamer Park in Lacey, Washington. The reason this fun filled ride was created was to raise much needed funds to support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Thurston County and to increase awareness of the amazing parks and trails in Lacey and the surrounding areas. The National Association of REALTORS® and the Boys and Girls Clubs recently joined forces in an effort to strengthen communities and support the country’s youth. Kimberley noted that, “these two outstanding community organizations really came together to make this a great event.”
Many members of Gateway Rotary and the Thurston County REALTORS® Association volunteered to help the event go smoothly. Michelle Wickett of Axia Home Loans is the current president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Thurston County and also a member of the Thurston County REALTORS® Association. Michelle was excited for the opportunity for these two organizations to join forces and provide the volunteers to make this event such a success. She was very appreciative of everyone’s participation and the monies raised for the local Boys and Girls Clubs. Jerry Wilkins, President of the Thurston County REALTORS® Association and also a Gateway Rotary member, said, “We are proud to partner with Gateway Rotary and the local Realtor® association. This partnership will have a significant impact toward providing support to the local Boys and Girls Clubs. It was really nice to see the readiness of Rotarians and REALTORS® to come out and support this initial event. We are looking forward to an even greater event next year.” Tour de Lacey also featured "Safety Town", which was a closed course for small children with balance bikes, training wheels, or simply new to riding. Thurston County Food Bank Executive Director - Robert Coit
April 17, 2013 - “Each year 40% of the food produced in America ends up in the landfill,” said Thurston County Food Bank (TCFB) Executive Director Robert Coit. On average, Americans throw away 20 pounds of food each month, which amounts to about $2,275 a year for a family of four. Coit advocated breaking our wasteful habits and donating the money we save to help families in need. Coit added, “We may not end poverty, but we could end hunger in our community.” Coit reminded Gateway Rotarians that meeting our community’s need for food includes collecting perishable food as well as non-perishable canned and boxed foods. To better serve those in need, TCFB expanded its infrastructure to collect, package, and redistribute nutritious fresh food from restaurants and grocery stores in 2012. TCFB made an investment in a warehouse so food can be purchased in larger quantities for better savings. Coit noted that anyone can be a hero by donating a 37¢ can of food and giving back to the community. But don’t forget that people need fresh fruits and vegetables for balanced nutrition. TCFB needs cash donations to pay for programs to purchase food to fill the gaps from food drives and for efficient storage and distribution operations. |

District Governor Judy Byron Visits Gateway Rotary![]() September 26, 2012 - District Governor Judy Byron (District 5020) visited Gateway Rotary this morning. Bryon, a resident of Sidney, BC (Vancouver Island), became a Rotarian through her experiences in the Rotary Group Study Exchange program to India in 1998. She has been active in Rotary ever since.
Of particular interest to certain members of Gateway, DG Byron retired as a Program Officer of the Correctional Services of Canada after 23 years of working with the incarcerated male offenders. Her soft spoken presentation did not reflect a stereotype of someone used to working within that area of occupation! (Strangely, this too was observed by some... Like, how would they know?!) DG Byron congratulated Gateway Rotary on being a 100% Paul Harris Club, as three members were recognized today (see the September Photo Album off the homepage). Further she reflected on the importance of individual clubs to drive Rotary - as grass roots approach - as opposed to one mandated by the District. Byron also talked about the importance of the New Generations program and of attracting new members. She noted this was apparently not the case for Gateway, but that the District's Membership Chair was Jerry Obendorf, just up the road in Shelton. At the end of her presentation, DG Byron thank Gateway to be the only club that has asked her to join their club What would be more fun that that? Thank you, DG Byron, for the visit. We look forward to your return! ![]() |

Dr. Raj Manhas is speaker at Jan 4th meeting![]() Dr. Raj Manhas, Superintendent of North Thurston Public School District, presented an update on the trends and accomplishments of the School District. The results of students and teachers working together is apparent in the student achievement scores released in August by the state. While their reading and writing student scores continue to meet or surpass the state, he noted recent significant gains this year in math and science. Dr. Manhas updated the audience on the current financial status of the School District and reviewed the financial considerations that make up the upcoming levy proposal. North Thurston Public Schools are facing an estimated reduction of more than $6 million in state and federal funding over the next two years. The 2011-17 Capital Facilities Plan projects enrollment to be 17,745 in 2020 and nearly 20,000 by 2031. The local levy is 22% of the district operating budget and supports comprehensive educational programs and helps pay for teachers. The NTSD Board approved a 4-year, $128 million replacement levy ballot measure for February 14, 2012. |
